“Alternative investments are Australia’s fastest growing asset class and projected to become Australia’s largest asset class by 2021, reflecting global trends.” Rainmaker Roundup, September Quarter 2016
Investments in alternative assets fall outside of traditional asset classes such as Fixed Income and Equities. Traditionally they include managed futures, private equity, venture capital, infrastructure and Hedge Funds.
Historically, alternatives have generated superior risk-adjusted returns and also introduce a level of diversification into a portfolio as they can have a low correlation and in some cases negative correlation to traditional investments.
In addition to diversification Alternative investment allow investors to gain exposure to asset classes previously only available to institutional and sophisticated clients.
